Reporting an Injury under the RIDDOR Regulations 2013

About the injured person's injuries

Enter details about the injured persons injuries. Identify the most severe injury if multiple injuries were sustained.

There is validation between the injury sustained and part of the body affected so that invalid selections cannot be made, eg fracture of the eye.

The selections you make may invalidate some of the choices available for the severity of the injury. For example, if a worker suffers a fractured arm, this has to be recorded as specified injury by definition under RIDDOR, and cannot be recorded as over-7-day. See the definition of a specified injury below.

Severity of injury

A specified injury to a worker includes:

  • fractures, other than to fingers, thumbs and toes;
  • amputations;
  • any injury likely to lead to permanent loss of sight or reduction in sight;
  • any crush injury to the head or torso causing damage to the brain or internal organs;
  • serious burns (including scalding) which (a) covers more than 10% of the body; or (b) causes significant damage to the eyes, respiratory system or other vital organs;
  • any scalping requiring hospital treatment;
  • any loss of consciousness caused by head injury or asphyxia
  • any other injury arising from working in an enclosed space which (a) leads to hypothermia or heat-induced illness; or (b) requires resuscitation or admittance to hospital for more than 24 hours.
  • Injury preventing the injured person from working for more than 7 days. (This category is only relevant if the injury is not 'specified injury'.) You must report accidents causing injuries that lead to a worker being incapacitated for over seven consecutive days. The report must be made within 15 days of the accident.

    An injury to a member of the public. Accidents causing an injury to a member of the public are reportable when the injured person was taken directly from the scene of the incident to hospital for treatment, or if occurring at a hospital, when they result in a specified injury. Member of the public includes schoolchildren, users of services, eg shoppers, hotel guests, patients, passers-by (ie those not involved in the work activity).
